4 TIPS TO MAINTAIN DESIGN CONSISTENCY THROUGHOUT YOUR HOME

The key to good interior design is maintaining consistency and unity in style throughout your whole home. This is easier said than done though, so it often ends up being overlooked by most homeowners who are DIYing their interior design. The idea behind consistency is creating rooms and spaces that compliment and play off of each other. The below tips will aid in your journey to consistent design throughout your home:

1 - SIMILAR MATERIALS

One of the easiest ways to get started is through the materials you choose for your home. If you want metal to pop up a lot in your home, choose metals with the same or similar finishes. This would include things such as light fixtures, faucets, mirrors, and door hardware/knobs. The same goes for if you have a lot of wood furniture and pieces popping up in your home - choose items with similar grain and stain to tie everything together.

2 - DECIDE ON YOUR STYLE

Pick a uniform style concept and stick with it throughout your home. There are plenty of styles to choose from, such as: modern, eclectic, contemporary, traditional, industrial, mid-century modern, farmhouse and much more. We suggest picking your vibe and what most resonates with you, then infuse it with fixtures, furniture, and decor throughout your home. Keep your style in mind as you move from room to room and you’ll get one step closer to design consistency.

3 - OVERALL COLOR THEME

Many assume to maintain design consistency, you have to use the same exact color somewhere in each room - not the case! Instead, choose an overall color theme for your house based around your personal favorite colors and the overall style you’re going with. When picking your color theme, make sure they all tell a similar story, exude the same feelings and compliment each other in some way. A good example is an artsy home - one room may have a vibrant green wall color while the next room sports a copper tv stand. Both make a statement, both fit within the same color theme.

4 - FLOORING

Do not, we repeat, do not choose different flooring for each room or space. This leaves too much room for error; too much room for one style to stop and for another to be picked up. The flooring is the root of the home and our eyes are drawn to it more than we realize, so pick a few materials you love and use them throughout in rooms that make sense. For example, pick out one tile for all the bathrooms and the laundry room then pick out a wood floor that will work for the kitchen and other common areas. Remember, you can always choose unique rugs to make zones and infuse your design style.
